OUR STORY

Foundation and Mission

Established in the 2006/07 season, the Tiwi Bombers began as a representative team in the NTFL before becoming a permanent fixture in the 2007/08 season. The club was founded with a powerful mission: to combat the alarmingly high suicide rates among young men on the Tiwi Islands. By using Australian football as a tool for engagement, the Tiwi Bombers have played a critical role in saving lives and fostering mental health and community well-being.

Journey and Resilience

Within five years of joining the NTFL, the Tiwi Bombers celebrated their first premiership, defeating the Nightcliff Football Club. Despite facing challenges on and off the field in recent years, the club has emerged stronger than ever, including a notable victory over St Mary’s - the 2023/24 NTFL Premiers - at their home ground, Wurrumiyanga Oval. As they approach their 20th NTFL season, the Tiwi Bombers continue to be a source of pride and resilience for their community.

Legacy and Impact

The Tiwi Islands are renowned for producing some of Australia’s most iconic AFL legends, including David Kantilla, Maurice Rioli Sr, Michael Long, Cyril Rioli Jnr, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, and Daniel Rioli. The Tiwi Bombers have gathered a loyal following across the country, further bolstered by the success of the Tiwi Islands Football League (TIFL). Known for its fast and exciting style of play, the TIFL Grand Final draws spectators nationwide, showcasing the enduring legacy of Tiwi football.
